405 nm laser replacing for the confocal

Hello, everyone.
Our 405nm diode laser of the ZEISS LSM510 meta confocal need to be change, It have run over 8000hrs during the past 5 years. I want to change it by myself, because it will be much cheaper. But I can not buy the same model as the old one. The laser company just don't sell it to others except zeiss.
So is there anyone can tell me which kind of 405nm laser is suitble for the zeiss lsm510 confocal? Thanks a lot if you can share your experience.

Re: 405 nm laser replacing for the confocal

Hello Zhan,

Point Source makes a good 25 mw 405 nm Diode Pumped Solid State laser that we have been using for the last year and a half with relatively no troubles. 5 years is a long time in relation to technical advances, so I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to get the same model. Good luck!

Re: 405 nm laser replacing for the confocal

The key thing is making sure the replacement laser fits into place.
Systems that use fiber-coupled lasers are easiest since the only thing
that matters is being able to plug in the fiber.  You could duct-tape
the laser itself anywhere you want as long as the fiber can reach.  We
have some systems that are free-space coupled, though, and this is
more complicated.  The laser body has to be able to shoot the beam
into a steering box at the right height, angle, etc. which can be
tricky.  It is possible, although slightly mechanically complicated,
to assemble a two-mirror periscope to steer a beam into a box at the
right angle, although you need room around your laser box to stick the
extra pieces of hardware.
