I opend this topic to get your opinions and experience about a trouble I got recently. Lately the HeNe 488nm emission laser (Melles-Griot) generates a striped image, with orizontal stripes of color alternated with dark ones, grossly like a venetiand blind, the bright difference is quite high. It happens at whatever setting I use (intensity, PMT gain, pixel dwell etc...) in standard mode as well as in spectral or DIC mode. After 15 minutes some of power on the laser starts working properly and the scan image is formed fine. Other lasers (408nm, 561nm, 633) work perfectly. But, seriously, whether it is your argon 488nm or your HeNe 633nm, what you are seeing is the typical symptom of a failing gas laser. The feedback system is attempting to maintain output, then reaches the maximum level of the anode current and trips out. It then cuts back in again .. and so on, giving you the 'venetian blinds'. I've seen it so many times ... It may be curable by re-alignment but most likely you need to have the laser re-gassed and rebuilt. The good news is that there are lots of companies offering competitive laser rebuilds these days, so shop around. Guy thank you so much for your brief but exhaustive explanation about the laser trouble. I myself did thought that the gas emission efficiency is not so performing anymore so the ionization can be reached later after a "buffer time" of energization of the remaining efficient gas. I do agree the laser is about to expire by comparing the working time so far and the halflife declared by the producer. Next, I take advantage of talking to you so if you can tell me more about the good news and the many companies that can compete with M-G with a good 488nm laser, I would be much more grateful to you.
