In a recent book edited by StephenPaddock:
Confocal Microscopy: Methods and Protocols (Springer)
There is a historical perspective chapter written by John White which mentions a cartoon that was featured in Science Magazine:
"The rapid acceptance of confocal microscopy in the late 1980s by the biomedical research community was extraordinary for such a novel and relatively expensive technology. Indeed, the journal Science ran a cartoon of a little girl asking Santa Claus for a laser- scanning microscope for Christmas!"
Because I enjoy historical memorabilia like this, does anyone out there know which issue of Science John White is referring to, or would anyone have a scan of this cartoon?
