A non-confocal question

Dear Listmembers

We have been able to acquire a Reichert Ultracut R ultra microtome to which we have attached a Leica FCS cryo-attachment.

The problem that we have is that there is no light for lower illumination of the sample which, as you will know, makes alignment and sample approach extremely tricky.  The base of the microtome has all the necessary to accommodate a light source at the back, but the sliding platform of the microtome is not adapted to accommodate the light-path.  We have stripped it down and it seems that a hole can be machined in the platform but I am a bit wary as there are also some electronics housed in the platform.

My questions: has anyone out there done such a conversion? Are there plans/ drawings available for this part of the microtome? Lastly, the first prize would be to locate a platform that can accommodate a light source for lower illumination.

Any other advice will be appreciated.

My apologies for this non-confocal posting and such a long-winded question.

Thanks

Alan Hall
