The Bio-Imaging Center provides an array of microscopy expertise and equipment including conventional fluorescence, confocal, multiphoton, super-resolution, TIRF, atomic force, laser microdissection, transmission and field emission scanning microscopes and ancillary sample preparation equipment. Under limited direction, the Associate Scientist will independently interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate research assignments in addition to formulating and conducting research on problems of considerable scope and complexity. The Associate Scientist will provide consultation, training and supervision to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, staff and faculty in the design, implementation and execution of microscopy-related projects with a special emphasis on confocal microscopy; assist in analyzing and managing microscopy data; develop competitive research proposals for external funding; collaborate with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application and reporting of research projects; make recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making; and evaluate, select and apply standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. Candidates must have a Ph.D. and two years of experience in Biology/Chemistry/Biophysics or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in confocal microscopy is required. Additional expertise with multiphoton microscopy techniques and super-resolution microscopy is preferred. Candidates will have knowledge of scientific approach, methodologies and scientific research principles, practices and protocols in order to design, organize and coordinate scientific research projects. Candidates will have the ability to perform independent original research in an advanced area of scientific expertise, the ability to develop scientific reports, proposals and publications, ability to use independent judgment to adapt and modify research concepts and approaches to specific projects. Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in the area of confocal and advanced light microscopy, the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment is fundamental.
