Dear list members,

is anybody aware of a source / vendor of big diameter filters for
illumination wavelength range selection?

I think of something like the old-fashioned Wratten gelatine filters,
but with a more pronounced wavelength range selection (bandpass preferred).
Diameter:5 to 10 cm, or bigger.
Filters may be based on glass or gelatine or some other substrate.

Thank you in advance,

Guenter

Dear Dr. Giese--

Check with Chroma Technologies.  They certainly can custom-make almost
anything you want.  For colored glass long-pass filters, check Schott--I
think they can make glass sheets of arbitrary sizes.

Good luck!

If your requirements are modest, your best price/performance tradeoff for
large filters is probably Schott filter glass as Martin suggests. For large
filters, interference filters will be very expensive compared to the
absorptive glass types.

Hi Guenter,

Newport web page has (specifications table near bottom of page):

Standard sizes ... 6.500" sq.

which would be 16.51 x 16.51 cm

Uses, "optical thin-film coating technology" -- aka interference
filters. See the web page for information on angle of incidence.

Newport Franklin has more stuff,
http://www.newportfranklin.com/products/products.htm

When I was with Applied Spectral Imaging, we used a set of Newport
narrow pass interference filters, 450, 550,0 650, 750 nm to calibrate
our SKY spectral imaging systems (2" = 50 mm sq). I've also used their
optical density filters for O.D. calibration with MetaMorph.

Guenter,

If you're looking for something very simple, akin to gelatine filters, then
look to theatrical lighting.  You can get colored plastic sheet (still
called 'gels' in the industry) up to 2' x 25' (though 20" x 24" is v common
and ~$25/sheet).  Maybe 2-300 colors per maker.  You might not be able to
select any arbitrary bandpass, but the transmission curves are available to
pick out one that might work for your application.  Idea is that you buy a
whole sheet and cut whatever size it is you want out.  You'll probably need
a frame or holder for the flimsy plastic - this is usually a piece of
stamped and folded sheet metal that the plastic gets sandwiched between
before sliding in front of the fixture (a 'gel frame').  They're plastic
and absorbing, so eventually it'll bleach or melt, at which point you throw
it out and cut a new one.

Next step up are dichroics made for theatrical and architectural lighting.
Makers again have a range of colors available, some of which may align to
what you're after.  Because they're made for large fixtures, very large (to
microscopists) sizes are available.  Over 12" diameter for the largest
standard size.  Almost certainly you can get a custom color if you need it
and it might come out cheaper than asking an "optical" filter maker to make
a big custom filter for you.

Rosco and Lee are two big makers of theatrical lighting filters.  If you
ask they'll almost certainly send you a swatch book of all of their
standard gels complete with transmission curves.  The book is fun to play
with even if you don't find the filter you're after.  Every major city (big
enough for a few music venues or theaters) has a lighting supply shop so it
shouldn't be hard to find a local vendor for any of these.

Thanks,
Rusty
