Biotrue and Data Management

Dear Microscopists,

A few years ago our imaging facility purchased a Collaborative Data
Management System from Biotrue. For our facility this was a very
straightforward web-based interface that allowed data archival,
thumbnail viewing, sharing, search, notes, meta data, etc.. that worked
with all of various microscope images and other file formats. The
software was originally developed with the NIH. Unfortunately, Biotrue
recently went out of business and I have a decision to make whether to
now move Terabytes of data over to something else or perhaps put effort
into getting access to the source code for us to maintain the existing
Biotrue software going forward. I like the software enough to consider
this option. Perhaps a user group could be started to try sort through
this possibility. My problem is that although earlier correspondence
with former employees of Biotrue occurred, recently it has been
hit-or-miss, and I still have no way of making updates to the software
as browsers change. I am slowly losing functionality. If there are any
Biotrue users out there that have solved this issue, could you please
contact me off line?

If I determine that I can’t make the Biotrue software work long term, I
am open to suggestions on other products that could meet the needs of
data, storage, searching, meta data, that is accessible remotely and
secure. Although we can manage more complex data management systems for
our own internal purposes, I really need the interface to be simple in
order for my frequently less computer savvy users to take advantage of a
centralized database without a significant burden to train them.

Thanks for any feedback.

Best Regards, Kirk
