C401- Electron Microscopist (The Salk Institute-La Jolla, CA)

The Waitt Advanced Biophotonics Center Core Facility, at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, is seeking a highly motivated and technically oriented individual to carry out electron microscopy services (TEM and SEM), in support of Salk's scientific initiatives. The Biophotonics Core is a recharge facility in rapid growth mode and will facilitate access to and provide logistical support for Salk researchers in both light and electron microscopy methods.

The Electron Microscopist, under the supervision of the Biophotonics Core Director, will run the electron microscopy instruments as a service for Salk Institute researchers. This will include sample preparation and histology, advising researchers on experimental design and operating and training Salk researchers in the use of transmission and scanning electron microscopy methods. The selected candidate will be expected to have extensive experience in histology and electron microscopy methods.

Key activities include:

*Serve as lead technical operator of the TEM and SEM instruments.
*Training Salk researchers in the use of the TEM and SEM methods.
*Prepare histological samples for EM imaging.
*Run samples on EM instruments and prepare data for Salk researchers.
*Advise and assist researchers on experimental design and appropriate data analysis methods.
*Assist Core Director in billing recharges to Salk researchers.
*Assist Core Director on identifying new EM imaging technologies that could benefit Salk Institute's scientific by keeping abreast of technical developments in the field by attending imaging workshops and conferences.
*Maintain core facilities EM instrumentation and lab space (histology prep space) as well as interact with manufacturer representatives on a regular basis in conjunction with the Core Director.
 
Education: Bachelor of Science in biological sciences or biomedical engineering required. Applicants with postgraduate degrees are encouraged to apply if they feel they have the necessary qualifications for the position.

Experience: The ideal candidate will have a biological sciences or biomedical engineering background with experience in electron microscopy and histology (preferably in a service-oriented core facility environment).

Special Requirements: Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced, cutting-edge research environment and be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate research needs. Incumbent should be an efficient multi-tasker, detailed record-keeper, and possess excellent organization skills to perform job duties with minimal supervision. The preferred candidate will have light microscopy experience or a willingness to learn.
