Calculating working distance

Search the CONFOCAL archive at http://listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=confocal
Hi everyone,

I am just wondering, if an objective lens does not state its working distance on the engraving, is it possible to somehow calculate it?

Thanks,

Matt Pearson.

You could calculate the focal length, but depending on the design of the lens the working distance can be quite different from the focal length.  Mainly because of windows in the lens, and clever tricks to give more working distance than the focal length would indicate.
