The BioImaging & Optics Platform (BIOP) at the School of Life Sciences of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) is offering a position to complement an existing team of five people.

The BIOP enables and facilitates access to state-of-the-art light microscopes for scientists within and outside the School. We support the research community and help answer front line and challenging questions in the life sciences through the use of modern light microscopes.
The platform is responsible for training users, giving advice on methods based on light microscopy, as well as for the maintenance of the instruments park. The current microscopy equipment includes such widefield fluorescent microscopes, point scanning confocal microscopes and multi-beam scanning microscopes. Newly emerging technologies like Stimulated Emissions depletion (STED), Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIMas well as point localization based approaches (STORM, PALM) are also offered, as is a light sheet microscope. Further information regarding the platform, including the detailed list of equipment (currently ... instruments), can be found at http://biop.epfl.ch/ .

The person filling this position will train research scientists to use the equipment of the core facility, assist the team in teaching courses on light microscopy, give advice to scientists regarding microscopy/microscopic assays (including image processing) and perform administrative duties as needed for billing, ordering supplies and organizing the day to day running of the platform.
The suitable candidate is expected to have a university degree (preferably master or higher) in a related area. Profound knowledge in light-microscopy and the readiness to explain the underlying principles to users of the platform is a must. A strong practical background in light microscopy connected to biological questions as well as solid knowledge in image processing is an asset. The applicant should be rigorous, reliable, well organized and have the flexibility needed for working in a service-oriented context. Good communication skills in English and the ability to operate as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment are required.
