Research Instrumentation Specialist

Position Description

The successful candidate for this position in the Department of Biological Sciences will be involved in providing maintenance and calibration support for research instrumentation, and supporting the daily operations of the department’s multi user HTS and Confocal Microscopy laboratories. The candidate will oversee the core Confocal Microscopy lab, assisting and training users in microscope operation, maintaining microscope, operating software, and scheduling and tracking microscope usage. In addition to providing routine maintenance on sophisticated lab instrumentation (FLIPR, liquid handlers, Confocal microscope), the candidate will be responsible for the routine maintenance and calibration of general lab equipment (including incubators, water systems, balances, and alarm systems). The candidate will also be responsible for ordering and managing supplies and compressed gases. This position requires a candidate with experience in the field of scientific instrument maintenance and support, as well as a solid educational and/or experience based background in drug discovery processes. A flexible approach to work, and excellent time management and multitasking skills are essential, as are excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work in a team oriented environment. Residency restrictions and CDC approval apply to this position.  

 

Position Requirement

  • A degree in Biological Sciences or a related scientific or engineering field.
  • A B.S plus 4 years specific experience; OR an MS degree, plus 2 years specific experience; OR Ph.D., plus 0 years specific experience.
  • A solid educational and experience based background in drug discovery processes and systems, with an emphasis on Robotics (Liquid Handling) and/or Fluorescence Imaging (Confocal Microscopy) and/or Automated cell based assays (FLIPR) is highly desirable.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in technical support within a biology/chemistry/engineering environment, and familiarity with some of the following equipment/systems; FLIPR, Janus, EP3, Multiprobe (Perkin Elmer), Confocal microscope, incubators, and balances.
  • Proficiency with various software programs (i.e., MS Word, Excel, Access, Spotfire, ActivityBase, IMCS Pro)
  • Hands on experience performing routine maintenance and basic calibrations on general laboratory equipment (i.e., balances, CO2 incubators, water systems, equipment alarm monitoring systems).
  • A flexible approach to work, and excellent time management and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multicultural team environment.
  • Must be capable of maintaining high productivity while performing self directed activities.
  • Must have the ability to follow standard lab protocols and procedures.
  • Will work around compressed gases, acids, solvents, vacuum pump oils, and other chemicals.
  • The ability to stoop, crouch, stand for extended periods, and lift 25lbs is necessary.
  • Must be able to pass CDC background check.

Zeiss LSM 410 Servicing

   We have a Zeiss LSM 410 confocal that was recently moved from another university to ours.
We are looking for someone who will be willing to come in and install it and get it running for us.
Does anyone have any information on any person or organization that may be willing to do this?
