Course Description:

CARS microscopy is a new laser scanning imaging technology that does not require labeling. It images molecular vibrational modes with high resolution, similar to confocal.  The application of CARS microscopy rapidly expands into in vivo tissue imaging, fat deposit mechanism studies, neuroscience, cosmetic skin care, and other research fields.  The course is designed for researchers, postdoctoral candidates, graduate students interested in the CARS microscopy technology basics, CARS technology development trend, theory, and its latest applications. It teaches basic theory of the scanning CARS system design and configurations, the latest laser technologies for CARS, and various commonly used CARS background suppression methods.  The course emphasis is hands-on and devoted about half of the time to laboratory sessions which covers how to build a CARS system from a regular confocal and the routine operations of various CARS setups.  It encourages faculty and student interaction.  There are no specific prerequisites for applicants, but an understanding of the basic principles of optics, confocal or lasers is desirable.

Live cells and fixed tissue samples are provided for course use.  Students can bring their own sample for testing on June 26, 2008.  Please contact the Xie group for advice on experiment design.

The topics covered are:

- CARS Microscopy: Coming of Age
- CARS Instrumentation: Seeking the Sensitivity Limit
- Confocal Microscopy
- Building a CARS Microscopy System
- Applications of CARS Microscopy to Neuroscience, Drug Delivery, and Obesity-Related Disorders
- Chasing Fats with CARS
- Imaging Brain Structures with CARS Microscopy
- Applications of CARS Microscopy to Skin Imaging
