This is the result of the recent conference hosted by the Advanced Imaging Center at Janelia. The conference (“Frontiers in Microscopy Technologies and Strategies for BioImaging Centers Network”) was represented by more than 50 institutions from 18 countries, and the meeting materials (abstract book, agenda and videos) can be found in the URLs below. Abstract book: https://tinyurl.com/y8nmzva7 Agenda: https://tinyurl.com/y785osjs Videos (grouped by sessions): http://tinyurl.com/yaleyr4a One of the main topics of discussion was how the bioimaging community in North America can organize to have a collective voice. While there will no doubt be challenges ahead, we feel that there will be numerous benefits. Currently, funding agencies do not have a representative bioimaging partner with which to conduct strategic dialogue, and our global peer organizations have no counterpart to form a closer alliance. BINA will work closely with the ABRF to better formulate meaningful partnership that would provide guidance, assistance, training opportunities, data sharing, and technology dissemination to the community, with a strict focus on bioimaging. In light of that, several former and current ABRF imaging track leaders are represented in the BINA core committee. We also look forward to working with the Microscopy Society of America and other regional societies to build and strengthen the community. It is important to clarify that BINA is a “network” – a platform for communication and for fostering closer partnerships. At this point, BINA is not a platform for sharing “infrastructure” like Euro-BioImaging wherein open access to technologies is managed. We intend to keep BINA as bottom-up as possible, so future steps will be collectively directed by the community. We will soon establish a website and start creating smaller task forces to organize meetings, workshops etc. For the time being, we want to leverage the immense enthusiasm from the Janelia conference to make this announcement, and to invite everyone to join our communication platform Slack via http://bioimagingna.slack.com Our Slack forum was kindly created by Beth Cimini from Broad Institute. We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting community. Your participation and voice are important. Abstract book: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__tinyurl.com_y8nmzva7&d=DwIGaQ&c=q6k2DsTcEGCcCb_WtVSz6hhIl8hvYssy7sH8ZwfbbKU&r=MVp-2yJ1A-yQtCbZ-DE9xd0W6E7srQQpV-yioYjTLyQ&m=a7JbSCzjLGJkO-y0826Qm7SGbtDRJzoMsyWrOGrQtCI&s=3TJsWpSVbXtM3_HiFQpikcOwhWJXC6on_o4qdm2p6as&e= Agenda: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__tinyurl.com_y785osjs&d=DwIGaQ&c=q6k2DsTcEGCcCb_WtVSz6hhIl8hvYssy7sH8ZwfbbKU&r=MVp-2yJ1A-yQtCbZ-DE9xd0W6E7srQQpV-yioYjTLyQ&m=a7JbSCzjLGJkO-y0826Qm7SGbtDRJzoMsyWrOGrQtCI&s=J3MtHTv9EWKbJNsAui4l_zjR9z_RE4HR8rxtlLuhnAM&e= Videos (grouped by sessions): https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__tinyurl.com_yaleyr4a&d=DwIGaQ&c=q6k2DsTcEGCcCb_WtVSz6hhIl8hvYssy7sH8ZwfbbKU&r=MVp-2yJ1A-yQtCbZ-DE9xd0W6E7srQQpV-yioYjTLyQ&m=a7JbSCzjLGJkO-y0826Qm7SGbtDRJzoMsyWrOGrQtCI&s=3xyLIYNQVqbWzBmPaIwHABY5IulYcMoo3AJkVRg5Geo&e= One of the main topics of discussion was how the bioimaging community in North America can organize to have a collective voice. For the time being, we want to leverage the immense enthusiasm from the Janelia conference to make this announcement, and to invite everyone to join our communication platform Slack via https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bioimagingna.slack.com&d=DwIGaQ&c=q6k2DsTcEGCcCb_WtVSz6hhIl8hvYssy7sH8ZwfbbKU&r=MVp-2yJ1A-yQtCbZ-DE9xd0W6E7srQQpV-yioYjTLyQ&m=a7JbSCzjLGJkO-y0826Qm7SGbtDRJzoMsyWrOGrQtCI&s=f4aIon16M97-4Ncloo5fEJp_3n67WA1Pb2J3MZpSwDg&e= Our Slack forum was kindly created by Beth Cimini from Broad Institute. I clearly see expansion in its broadest sense. However, image processing, handling of large data sets, parallel computing and much more related to data analysis has been left behind. It sounds to be either very slow, extremely difficult to achieve, or represent chronic lack of funding. I do not mention that imaging without killing live specimen is still a challenge. Working with under sampled data seems to be a new normal... Thus, obvious question. What are the priorities in regard to fast quantitative image analysis? None of the commercial software can run on a server, under unix/linux, utilize hundreds of CPU nodes, GPU arrays, etc., not mentioning batch image processing jobs.May be should stop expanding and start working on speeding up data processing. I am nearly sure that Petabytes of image data have not been analyzed yet, right? For full disclosure I am a contract image algorithm developer, so I have a bias here. I'd love to see BioImaging North America support the frameworks I work with (ImageJ, KNIME, Python, Matlab, etc.). Support of Cloud Computing, HPC and open source frameworks by groups like this is important. Thus, obvious question. What are the priorities in regard to fast > quantitative image analysis? I'm curious about this as well. Will the group be running courses in image processing and data analysis?? Will the group be involved in the image analysis community?? Also I hope the group will also prioritize open data, reproducibility and testing. I've seen a number of cases where imaging algorithms from the literature are hard to reproduce in practice. Often times, the original steps to implement an algorithm or protocol are not documented clearly, and in many cases the algorithm was only tested on a small number of images. As new images are tested by other people, issues arise. It's vitally important that groups like BioImaging North America, fully support reproducibiliy and encourage a culture of rigorous (and when possible open) testing. This could be achieved easily by having an open data policy. Members of the group could open up their data to the community, allow both open source and commercial vendors to have access and run tests, and discuss the results. Support for shared frameworks (in addition to the already mentioned ImageJ, KNIME, Python, and MatLab, I would also add OMERO, micro-Manager and CellProfiler). Support for development of shared metadata standards that go beyond raw images. Support for development of shared error propagation estimation procedures. All of these aspects would be great and should be taken into consideration moving forwards.
