Very likely it had to do with a recent update, possibly from end of last week so it came up today. After some tinkering around I solved it, so I thought I share it here. It appears to have started with an "Installing updates" screen after boot up (according to the user who reported the problem). Around about "30% installed" it aborted and went into the windows repair mode. Repair failed and after rebooting the same sequence would happen again (recalled from memory, there might have been additional reboots involved). In repair mode, the detailed information screen included "Missing Os Loader" and "Root cause found: Boot manager failed to find OS loader" After some internet search (still in repair mode) I opened the command prompt and entered the three usual bootrec commands: bootrec.exe /fixmbr bootrec.exe /fixboot bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd but this also did not find a bootloader. I then entered at the command prompt what was described here:: https://superuser.com/questions/909738/windows-7-64-bit-system-repair-loop |dism.exe /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions| It gave some message about scratch directory space but continued to "completed successfully". I rebooted once more and selected "Start Windows Normally" (and not recommended repair) and eventually the windows login screen appeared. There was one "important update" that failed, KB4516065. But I have no way of telling if this caused the problem. Anyway, afterwards this update installed without problems and the system rebooted. No problems occurred so far on other, similar systems. Maybe it is just a freak accident. But since the cited website says "August 2019 Windows 7 update caused this problem." I might not be the only one facing this right now. The good news is that Leica must be aware of the problem. The bad news is that I haven’t heard of any updates for fixing it. Thanks for sharing just in case someone accidentally runs updates on our system!
