we use our in-house software endrov ImServ since it's the only database
that can deal with our complex data. at the moment I would recommend
using OME if you need a database and have rather normal requirements.
note that it's not as fast as direct file system access and you might
still need additional databases to cover your acquired data since the
schemas tend to be fixed or inflexible. beware of technical lock-in if
you go with a proprietary solution.
unless you need over-the-internet access with detailed permissions or
have very assorted images, a database might not buy you much. we need it
mainly because our images are ~5gb each and it allows remote users to
only download the parts they are viewing.
