Digital Pathology: Breaking the Glass Slide Habit! This two-day course, taking
place on 25 - 26 March in Belfast, is jointly organised by the Royal
Microscopical Society and Queen's University Belfast.
Digital Pathology is a rapidly developing technology that is based on scanning
whole slides at high resolution. It allows whole microscopic slides to be
viewed on a computer monitor with software that allows navigation and
magnification of the “virtual slide”, in much the same way as one would view a
traditional glass slide. These images are very large, sometimes exceeding
100,000x100, 000 pixels and 25 Gbytes in size for a single slide, demanding
bespoke requirements for both viewing, serving and storage image libraries. In
addition, using dedicated software; virtual slides can be viewed on-line using
standard browser technology opening up extensive applications for this
technology for microscopy-based education, tissue-based research, biomarker
discovery, image analysis and clinical diagnosis. Attendees are encouraged to
bring their own glass slides.
Lectures will concentrate on:
a. Applications of virtual microscopy in the Clinical and Research environment
(Biomarker research, Bio banking, Tissue Micro Array (TMA) Analysis, Clinical
Trials, Image analysis and Virtual slide based education)
b. Generation of virtual libraries (Slide hosting, content management and IT
Networks)
c. Whole slide management for virtual microscopy using Path XL software
which supports a range of activities in Education, Research and Clinical
Practice.
