Hey all,

I have an application question (not necessarily confocal related). Need
to add a fluorescent dye/probe to a mineral oil. Any and all suggestions
much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rod

Laurdan, prodan, or nile red? They do ok in non polar environments I
believe. Others may have better suggestions.

DiI, DiO, DiA, DiR are good candidates as well.

consider using Oil Red O

http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/search?interface=All&term=oil+red+o&lang=en&region=US&N=0+220003048&focus=product

You probably do not need to use ultra-pure stuff, so could save some
money by going with not-so-pure products.

See also google search:

fluorescent dye mineral oil

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=fluorescent+dye+mineral+oil

One of the hits sells by the gallon:

http://www.riskreactor.com/fluorescent-dye-tracers/auto-car-black-light-dyes/1-gal-oiltracerc8-petroleum-and-mineral-oil-uv-tracer/

and has more sections

http://www.riskreactor.com/fluorescent-dye-tracers/

See also the OIL-GLO series at

http://www.spectroline.com/fluorescent-dyes-industrial

PDf helpfully includes English and metric units:

• Several Sizes — Choose from 8 oz (237 ml), pint (473 ml) or quart (946
ml) bottles as well as gallon (3.8 L) containers. Larger sizes also
available.

If any of these are highly photostable, please let me (and the listserv)
know - could make nice microscope performance test reagents (no
evaporation?) re: concurrent thread.

enjoy,

George

p.s. I am a big fan of DiI (Sigma-Alrdich's lowest purity grade) for
labeling blood vessels (aka "vessel painting"), see

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=24052350

Price wise, probably more expensive than Oil Red O or by-the gallon (or
liters) oil tracers.
