Free image viewer out there? (includes 16bit tif support)

Search the CONFOCAL archive at
http://listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=confocal

Hi all,

(I have searched through the archives without finding any recent posts)

Does anyone know of a basic (and free) image viewing software capable of
viewing 8, 16, and 24bit images?  A bonus would be 3D tif (.stk, .lsm)
support.  I know Zeiss distributes Axiovision LE free of charage, but
this is a large install with lots of unnecessary extras for only viewing
images.

We already have many Metamorph licenses, but I'd like to give individual
user's the ability to view images on their desktop.

Thanks,
Doug

If you haven't heard of ImageJ, it sounds as if it's just what you're
looking for.  Free, runs on any platform, 3d capabilities, excellent
support network of users and developers and plugins that allow
importation of a variety of image formats.

Get it at http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/ .

Good luck!

This is a no-brainer.  ImageJ will meet your needs, and much much more,  Free for PC, Mac, Linux.  Huge user base, updated frequently, reads almost any file format with the aid of the LOCI Bioformats importers.  I like the version with the microscopy plugins collection, which can be obtained from this site:

I suggest you have a look at ImageJ (http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/)
For just a viewer that allow you to sift trough folders of images,
have a look at Dimin Viewer (http://dimin.m6.net/software/viewer/). It
is a windows only thumbnail viewer that recognize .stk formats.

Or bioimage xt.
Really good support for 3d.
But may lack stability.

Try Irfanview ( www.irfanview.com )

It has 2 modules, 1 just a thumbnail viewer and the other module opens a huge number of formats, useful for converting images.

Doug,

another vote for ImageJ. Coupled with Loci Bioformats one is able to open
more or less everything. The MacBiophotonics plugin package which was
already mentioned is also very powerful.

Two more options:

- BioImageXD: powerful 3D, but still under development
- Improvision Volocity LE: easy-to-use layout, but only basic features

Hi
If your files are in the format, pic, tiff, jpg, bmp,
avi,mtg or jif, then you may try using free software
'confoal assistant'. 'lsm' format cannot be seen.
Viewing of single or Z-section images, construction of
3D and merging of images is possible.
Best wishes,
Nishigandha Naik

Hi Doug,

ImageJ (most current version) with Bio-Format. I recommend MBF ImageJ
bundle,
http://www.macbiophotonics.ca/imagej/installing_imagej.htm
especially since they added the LOCI Bio-Formats.

Bio-Formats (http://www.loci.wisc.edu/ome/formats.html) supports
pretty much all the confocal microscope software file formats (in
table at bottom of page, #32 is .stk, #54 is LSM510), though I'm not
sure any combination of checkboxes will result in an image that looks
like the original software's display (i.e. a 4 channel expt displayed
in its original colors).

Zeiss recently released ZEN LE (check their web site) - it has
minimal features, works best on 24" or longer monitor.

George

looks also very usable for your purposes. I think it is free so You can easilly
try it ;-)
