Dear all
I've been watching the debate with interest. I agree it can be difficult to find women speakers, as they are in the minority, but it is not impossible.
If all the speakers are male, then when one is running one's own meetings/workshops it's the male speakers that spring to mind first, as one has already heard them speak elsewhere, and so this becomes self-re-inforcing.
Thus, on principle I do not attend meetings where all the invited speakers are male. A small but effective protest one hopes, as there are lots of meetings to chose from, so why not just go to the ones that actually have women speakers?
It is always a good idea to have selected talks from abstracts to help with this problem, as this way younger speakers, where the % of women is usually higher, are selected to talk and are usually really excellent. This helps their careers, and will eventually lead to more senior women, one would hope.
All best
Michelle
