I charge a flat access fee for all general equipment (microtomes, basic
scope etc.) that is not attached to a computer.  For the computer controlled
workstations I have switched from Pgina to a commercial product worktime
(very inexpensive and works great).

To clarify: I am talking about usage that does not normally require the use of
the computer, such as screening samples through the eyepieces. We already
have a tracking software that creates a log as soon as someone logs in to use
the camera software. What I am after is a solution whereupon the power to the
microscope was controlled through login or through activation of a software, the
latter would then of course require login and the person would be tracked.

Hi,

Maybe something like this?

http://www.electronic-software-shop.com/lng/en/usb-relay-board-with-4-relays-220v.html

The relays are probably not strong enough for the mic lamps, but maybe there is something
similar, more professional, on the market?

or something like this?

The computer tells the different outlets when to switch "on" - you just have to make sure that
the microscope cables stay where they are...
