How to install a DPSS 561 on a Leica SP2

Hello List,

I am planning to install a DPSS 561 laser on a Leica SP2-AOBS, in place of the exhausted HeNe 543.

Beside the Leica upgrade kit, I am also considering to directly buy the laser myself and have Leica do just the alignment and AOTF/AOBS software reprogramming.  My concern is then how to bring the DPPS beam into the lasers-merge module inside the SP2 laser box.
I will need either a laser holder to place the DPSS into the laser box in free-space, or a fiber-coupler to the lasers-merge module so that I can keep the DPSS outside.

Has anyone done this already and can give suggestions?

I am also very interested in feedback from DPSS561 users!! I want to do FRAP and long-term time lapse, is a 25mW a reasonable size to go for (also considering the power losses in case of fiber-coupling the laser) ?

Thanks!

Tommaso

Re: How to install a DPSS 561 on a Leica SP2

Hello Tommaso,

25mW is enough power on a single point scanner, the los by fiber coupling is rarely more than 50%. The HeNe 543 was typically only 1mW and even that was sufficient for bleaching at least with high NA lenses.

Cheers, j

Re: How to install a DPSS 561 on a Leica SP2

I second this.  If you have power to spare fiber coupling will be simplest.

Re: How to install a DPSS 561 on a Leica SP2

Jens and Craig,

thank you for your comments! I will inquire Leica if they can produce an adapter to fiber-couple the laser merge module. Hopefully they won't charge the whole "upgrade kit" for that!

Cheers,

Tommaso
