Imaging Survey

Hello –

Has anyone put together a survey to poll users / potential users for their microscopy and image analysis needs / demands?

Thanks you for any assistance.

I tried to setup such an on-line questionnaire using MS FrontPage, it was easy to do, but our server couldn’t run it as it didn’t support Frontpage extensions.

So we just contacted our IT department with exactly what we wanted, and they set up an on–line questionnaire for us within 24hours, using Pearl [spelt PERL*,  I believe]. It was accessed via our web-site, and we advertised it via email to our users. The questionnaire asked everything we wanted to know via tick-boxes etc.., had free text input for comments and users put in their name, dept and email/phone. It was restricted to our intra-net users only [or those logged into our WTCHG servers], i.e. our Microscopy Users. Selected users were asked to provide more detail on what they would use the new equipment for. We used the users responses to help the case for internal funding for this specific microscope equipment [which was successful].

We also have 3 users meetings a year, and have more a general on-going A4 paper questionnaire for feedback on our Core.

*Best I’ve seen is TINA, which stands for ‘This In Not an Acronym’.

Hi Lars,

I just recently put one together for the department, as we've refurbished our facility and are getting new instruments - so it was time to (re-)assess. Because all free online poll systems I found are anonymous, I sent out a macro-enabled Word file (so people can just tick boxes). To be honest, you'll always get more out of it by talking to people, but it's good to uncover 'hidden' users and for audit purposes. If you'd like the document, let me know and I can send it to you.

Kind regards

Philippe

Lars,

A large portion of Barbara Foster's business at Microscopy/Microscopy
Education is focussed on conducting and publishing surveys like the one
you want to have.

Microscopy Today magazine has used her services for conducting
microscopist salary surveys.

Her email is above.

Dear Lars,

MME hasn't done a study specifically on this area for some time.  However, Microscopy Today has had interest in this sort of thing in the past and I think that we can get their cooperation. I'll email Charles Lyman today, to see if we can get something going.  In the meantime, I would welcome questions from the listserver that you would like to see the answers to.   As always, we have the ability to break the data down by type of instrumentation used (ex: LM, SEM, TEM, AFM, STM, EDS/WDX, etc.), by type of lab (academic vs industrial vs gov, etc.), by discipline (ex: bio, mat sci, nanotech, semi, medical/clinical).

This actually might make a good 2 part study: one for microscopy needs/demands; one for image analysis.

Again, I'll contact Charles and see what he thinks.

Best regards

Phillipe,

I would appreciate a copy of this document.

By the way, we have more advanced in-house analysis capabilities than are typically provided with on-line survey sites.  And, while I can't believe it, this year marks our 20th anniversary of doing research for the industry!
