Imaging Specialist: Research Associate Grade 7
Salary: £27,183 - £35,469 A position (for 3 years in the first instance) is available for an imaging specialist who will manage an established multi-user imaging facility in the Department of Zoology University of Cambridge (UK), funded by The Wellcome Trust. The postholder will work with research groups investigating cellular events including axon guidance, cell migration, cell polarisation, vesicle trafficking, calcium signalling and DNA replication and repair. The facility supports 11 research groups and is equipped with: • Two Leica SP5 AOBS-based confocal systems; one with tandem scanner, environmental chamber and an Eppendorf micromanipulation and injection system; • Leica SP1 multi-line point scanning confocal; • Spinning disk (CSU-10) confocal system with a MicroPoint cell ablation system; • Leica DMIRBE wide field system and Leica MZ 16 fluorescence stereoscope,. Image analysis tasks in the Facility are supported by state-of-the-art computers, equipped with Amira, Volocity and Huygens Pro software. The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring optimal working conditions for confocal microscopy and supporting computer facilities. She/he will take an active, collaborative part in research projects by pursuing advanced fluorescence microscopy applications, such as time lapse, particle tracking, deconvolution, FRAP and FRET, and by developing new methods for effective data handling and analysis. This will demand enthusiasm for IT, sustained cutting-edge knowledge of fluorescence microscopy and imaging and good communications skills. Her/his contributions will also include, but will not be limited to, planning and executing complex experiments and image analysis algorithms, equipment building, and computer programming. The Department provides an excellent environment for someone with a keen interest in partaking in individual projects with research groups as well as providing routine support for image acquisition and analysis tasks. Significant contributions to concrete projects will lead to co-authorship in high-quality papers. Applicants should have a B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Information Technology (IT), Physics, Engineering or Biology and must have understanding and experience of IT.
