Postdoctoral position available at the

Alberto Diaspro's nanoscopy lab at the Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - IIT, Genova, Italia

in advanced optical technology for deep functional imaging in the intact cerebral cortex

-------------

The Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - IIT - was founded with the objective of promoting the country's technological development and further education in science and technology. In this sense, IIT’s scientific program is based in the combination of the basic scientific research with the development of technical applications, a major inspirational principle. The research areas cover scientific topics of high innovative content, which represent the most advanced frontiers of modern technology, with wide application possibilities in various fields ranging from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences, and nanobiotechnology.

We invite applications for one postdoctoral position (duration 2 years) focusing on the development and application of innovative optical methodologies for the study of brain function. We aim at building a new two-photon microscope based on a regenerative amplifier laser, with high peak pulse power, short pulse width and low repetition rate for imaging the function of deep cortical layers in vivo. We will also implement a novel form of super resolution technique, SW 2PE-STED, on this microscope. The project is based on recent technical developments (Bianchini et al. PNAS 2012) and will be carried out in collaboration between the Department of Neuroscience and Brain Technologies and the Nanophysics Facility at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.

Applicants should have a strong background in optics, with specific focus on applied optics for neuroscience applications, be highly independent and have a strong propensity for interdisciplinary research. Prior experience with confocal microscopes, multiphoton fluorescence microscopy and super resolution techniques would be advantageous. Candidates must hold a PhD in physics, engineering or a related discipline and be highly motivated and creative individuals who want to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment.

Applications (full CV, two recommendation letters, statement of research interest) should be sent by email to Dr. Paolo Bianchini ( [hidden email]) and Dr. Tommaso Fellin ( [hidden email]).  Please apply before  June 30, 2013.

In order to comply with the Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), we have to kindly ask the candidate to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data. We inform you that the information you provide will be used solely for the purpose of assessing your professional profile to meet the requirements of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. Your data will be processed by Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, with headquarters in Genoa, Via Morego 30, acting as the Data Holder, using computer and paper based means, observing the rules on protection of personal data, including those relating to the security of data. Please also note that, pursuant to art.7 of Legislative Decree 196/2003, you may exercise your rights at any time as a party concerned by contacting the Data Manager.

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively seeks diversity in the workforce.
