RESEARCH ASSISTANT
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
South Dakota State University

The lab of Dr. Darci Fink in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at South Dakota State University is seeking an enthusiastic Research Assistant to add to our team!  We use state-of-the-art microscopy techniques and cellular and animal models to answer pressing biological questions in cancer, lymphatic and nerve biology, and inflammation.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in fluorescence microscopy, and excellent communication and organizational skills.  Additional responsibilities may include supervision of undergraduate research projects and laboratory management.  This is a full-time, hourly, benefit-eligible position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

-        Performs intravital and other microscopy techniques including:

o   Epifluorescence microscopy

o   Confocal microscopy

o   Multiphoton microscopy

-        Designs, performs, documents, and interprets results of laboratory experiments

-        Breeds and genotypes transgenic mice and manages colonies

-        Manages laboratory operations including:

o   Ordering supplies and reagents

o   Maintaining laboratory equipment

o   Record-keeping

o   Organization

o   May oversee undergraduate research projects

-        Prepares manuscripts for publication and presents data at local, regional, or national meetings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

-        Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, or related science and one year of research experience

OR

-        Master's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, or related science

Other requirements:

-        Appropriate level of critical thinking and math skills to perform laboratory experiments

-        Effective written communication skills

-        Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-        Additional 1-2 years of research experience
-        Experience working with and managing laboratory mice
-        Microscopy experience
