Hi All,

Does anyone know (well, James will...) when the new edition of the Handbook
is coming out?  We have the 3rd edition and have been looking into updating
our little library of microscopy books.
  Many thanks!

Zoltan

Zoltan,

I recall when I participated in Jim's course back in 2007 that he said if he were to write another edition of the book, it would most likely be in some web-based format because the book has reached an enormous size already (the complementary copy all course participants received nearly put me over the baggage weight limit on the trip back home!). I still consider most of this book up-to-date though, with only two or three chapters needing a bit of a touch-up now. I use the book often as a reference and I usually find the answer I'm looking for in there. Maybe it's too early right now, but see what Jim says.

Jim said quite positively that this edition would be the last.  Then again, how many 'last' tours did Nellie Melba do?  A precedent that seems to have been followed by many musos of all persuasions since then.  But I honestly don't think he will do another, and the third edition is still hugely relevant.  Of course it can't contain what's been published since then, but it does have enough pointers for you to find it.

Thanks John! Yes, we still use the 3rd edition as well of course, but we
wanted a 2nd copy, thus we figured we may as well get the new edition.  The
size: well, yes; when one of us takes it home for the weekend tor read,
he/she doesn't feel like bringing it back due to its weight :)  Great
resource of course.

Hi all,

I will write to the publisher to see if we can
find heavier paper. Then we will clearly sell
more Handbooks!

For the foreseeable future, there are no plans for a new edition.

I have few enough friends as it is and can't
afford to have 122 (or more!) authors not
speaking to me any more.

However, you are all most welcome to sign up for
the 2012 UBC Live-Cell Course and get a "free"
copy!!!

Enjoy,

JP
