Position Title: Lead Scientist
Department: Biomedical Engineering
Grade: 32E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The National Institutes of Health Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (NIH COBRE) program has funded a multi-year, $12 million program entitled The Delaware Center for Musculoskeletal Research (DCMR). The Center seeks to develop and enhance UD’s research infrastructure associated with the field of musculoskeletal biomedical research. The Center is seeking to hire a highly motivated Lead Scientist. The Lead Scientist will manage the daily operation of the Core, lead equipment maintenance and purchases, provide technical leadership, assist the Core Co-Directors, and provide technical services and training for Research Core users. The Lead Scientist will work in close conjunction with and supervise Core Staff (Biomechanical Engineer, Veterinarian and Histology Specialist, and Bioimaging Scientist), who will provide technical support, training, and quality assurance and monitoring.  The Lead Scientist will work closely with the Center Business Administrator for purchasing, invoicing, and project tracking.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage daily Research Core operation, including user support, user training, equipment maintenance, quality control, and integration of new equipment
• Work with the Core Co-Directors and Research Core Staff to meet the users’ standard and customized needs
• Support and manage/supervise the Research Core Staff
• Publish, update, and archive working protocols, prototype designs, user manuals, and standard operational procedures, and developing short courses and organizing workshops for training
• Support the Administrative Core in scheduling, project tracking, invoicing, and payment processing.
• Collect usage data and supporting the Core Co-Directors in evaluation and reporting
• Provide support and training in bioimaging
• Maintain a database to ensure routine maintenance of major equipment and perform maintenance and calibration checks to ensure high quality operation of the Research Core equipment
• Maintain annual service contracts
• Maintain a log of errors and problems that will be used for quality control, equipment performance will be evaluated and calibrated according to the manufacturers’ directions.
• Maintain operating manuals and calibration devices for instrumentation
• Maintain a database on user training and certification, including training sessions, the level of supervision needed for equipment of interest, and certification of unsupervised use
• Meet with Co-Directors and users regularly to determine if results from experiments differ from previous studies
• Identify emerging challenges and gaps in equipment and services and make recommendations to the Co-Directors.
• In conjunction with Co-Directors, decide on repairs, upgrades, and replacements based on discussions with users and/or recurring problems with calibration checks or maintenance
• Develop new protocols and preliminary/feasibility data for DCMR investigators
• Provide recommendations in specifications for purchase of a photoacoustic ultrasound micro-imaging system and lead deployment of this new high-end research system to Center users.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Doctoral degree or equivalent, with three years of related experience
• Experience with advanced bioimaging and biomechanical analysis techniques involving small animals and animal tissues, including photoacoustic ultrasound micro-imaging, IVIS imaging, CT imaging, and/or in vivo/ex vivo biomechanical loading
• Ability to work collaboratively with university faculty, other researchers, and with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
• Supervisory experience
• Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects
• Ability to develop and execute research methodologies and protocols
• Effective oral and written communication and organizational skills
• Ability to acquire, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain a wide range of computer systems

The Center has recently received $1M funding to purchase a Visual Sonics Vevo® LAZR-X Photoacoustic Ultrasound Imaging System (a state-of-the-art system designed for translational small animal imaging that enables the researcher to obtain in vivo anatomical, functional, physiological and molecular data simultaneously, non-invasively, and in real-time). The preferred candidate will have expertise with this system.
