This full-time position is available for 1 year in the first instance, with the possibility of extension upon reaching the goals and deliverables defined in the microscopy facility business plan and subject to available funds within the Research Center budget. Job description. The Facility Manager, will report to the Microscopy Facility Director(s) and will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the facility. The facility is housed in a brand new Research Center and includes a wide range of Leica microscope systems including a laser- scanning confocal system, a spinning disc confocal system with TIRF (Quorum Technologies/Visitech), a multi-photon system, a STED super-resolution system, a laser dissection system, wide-field systems, a stereo-dissection system and image analysis workstations. Extensive training on all equipment will be provided by the suppliers. Summary of key responsibilities: Day-to-day responsibilities: - Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of the equipment through liaison with representatives of Leica Microsystems and other suppliers. - Ensure proper training, supervision and scheduling of the equipment. - Advise researchers and end-users in aspects of their experimental design from choice of imaging modality, to sample preparation, to image acquisition and image analysis. - Manage the collection of user fees and monitor the operational budget. - Ensure that all Sainte-Justine Hospital procedures and health and safety regulations are followed. Ongoing/Periodic responsibilities: - Contribute to establishing, monitoring and evolving the operational policies of the Facility. - Develop educational tools for researchers and periodically deliver/organise educational and promotional activities such as seminars and workshops, potentially in collaboration with external parties, either in-house or at external sites. - Test and perform cost/benefit analysis on appropriate consumables and accessories prior to purchase. - Compile periodic reports of budget projections, equipment usage statistics, and research outputs such as publications, etc. - Actively engage with the Canadian microscopy community on behalf of the Facility, including attending relevant meetings. - Keep abreast of relevant technological developments and work to implement and/or adapt new approaches of potential use to local researchers. - Actively participate in the identification and implementation of strategies for ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Facility. Qualifications and competencies - Must have in-depth knowledge of cellular and molecular sciences, normally acquired though post-secondary education or equivalent experience (MSc. required, PhD. preferred, post-doctoral experience considered a further asset). Applicants with a relevant background in physics/engineering (e.g. optics/lasers/programming) are also encouraged to apply. - Must have extensive hands-on experience of biological imaging, including wide-field and confocal imaging, and a solid theoretical understanding of all current and emerging microscopy technologies. Experience with multi-photon, STED, and TIRF microscopy would be an asset. - Must have knowledge of histology, cell culture and general lab protocols and methodologies used in the biological sciences. - Must exhibit strong computer literacy including experience with image analysis software. - Must have demonstrated high levels of initiative, autonomy and the ability to assume a high level of responsibility. - Must have strong interpersonal skills needed to effectively deal with different people and groups, both scientific and non scientific Skills and qualities sought - Creativity and proactivity: demonstrates proactivity, efficiency and creativity to find efficient solutions, to ensure a constant evolution and optimization of the microscopy platform. - A rigorous and effective approach: ability to analyze and understand the internal and external environment to guide rapid decision-making, balancing risks / effectiveness. Shares the values of excellence and commitment required to position the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center and develop the microscopy platform - Ability to work independently, to be creative and to "think outside the box" - Strong leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, in both official languages of Canada. - Ability to encourage collaboration in order to develop transversality. - Ability to mobilize teams by ensuring a presence and developing team members' sense of competence. - Ability to interact in a fun, challenging and effective way with people from different sectors, and with creativity and openness. - Experience in editing and writing grant applications is an asset.
