We are seeking an energetic Scientific Officer to join the facility to work on cutting edge microscopy techniques and to administer the 'OMX' structured illumination/multi-channel live cell imaging system, which breaks through the resolution barrier previously imposed on the light microscope (Schermelleh et al. (2008) Science 320:1332). Educated to PhD level or with appropriate experience, the successful candidate will have a strong interest and understanding of light microscopy and its application to biological research, especially in living cells. Significant experience in the use and configuration of fluorescence microscopes is also necessary and familiarity with a variety of computer systems will be helpful. We are willing to consider a range of different types of expertise ranging from strong experience in biological research with some experience in advanced light microscopy to strong training in photonics and/or imaging with some familiarity with biological applications of microscopy. Based in the central facility as part of the imaging team and reporting to the facility head and the OMX academic lead, the successful applicant will administer the OMX microscope and provide support for users from our own facility as well as from throughout Scotland. This is a unique opportunity to help provide a proven, revolutionary technology to cell and developmental biologists throughout a small country with a world-leading life sciences research portfolio. The Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance funded appointment will be offered for a fixed-term period starting March 2010. An appointment may be made at Grade 7 if the successful candidate does not meet the full skill set required for the post at Grade 8.
