The specialist will join a team that provides support across 3 newly merged microscopy core facilities on the UCSF Mission Bay campus including the Nikon Imaging Center at UCSF, the Center for Advance Multiphoton Microscopy, and the Cardiovascular Research Institute Microscopy Core. These 3 facilities provide access to 14 state-of-the-art microscopes for use by the UCSF community and serve over 400 scientists a year. The successful candidate will be one of the initial points of contact for users seeking to use the core facility and will be responsible for advising them on the choice of microscope for their experiment, provide training on the microscopes, and assist in troubleshooting. Strong technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and a commitment to customer service is extremely important. This individual will also be responsible for routine cleaning and maintenance of microscopes, testing of microscope performance, and troubleshooting problems with the microscopes. Within these parameters, the successful candidate will have considerable freedom which could include collaborations with users. Required Qualifications: • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess at minimum a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five years in a laboratory environment. • Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten years in a laboratory environment. • Previous experience with microscopy • We are particularly looking for candidates with experience in multiphoton microscopy, programming, or development of microscopy hardware. • Candidates should have strong organizational skills, be flexible and able to prioritize tasks, have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: • A PhD degree in biology, physics, optics, or a related field. • Previous experience with equipment maintenance, image analysis and training in a core facility environment is desirable.
