Every multicellular organism is associated with a diverse array of microbes, and although it has become evident that these microbes contribute significantly to their hosts’ functions – and that hosts influence their microbiota – the mechanisms underlying these interactions remain unclear. The META Center aims to generate fundamental new knowledge regarding these interactions by developing new approaches for imaging, modeling, and systems-level data analysis and by integrating concepts from genomics, developmental biology, and ecology. The candidate will build on existing local expertise in light sheet fluorescence microscopy and will lead efforts to build and use an instrument that combines light sheet imaging, multiphoton excitation, and other optical techniques to provide unprecedented views of the structure and organization of microbial populations in developing zebrafish. He/she will interact with the vibrant and highly interdisciplinary community of research groups that make up the Center, helping to design and implement a variety of experiments, and will also have the opportunity to develop his/her own research interests. Applicants must have a Ph.D. from a relevant discipline such as physics, biophysics, or bioengineering, and expertise in imaging-related optics. Applicants with a strong background in microscopy instrumentation development, biological imaging, and computational image analysis are strongly preferred. The position is initially for a 1 year term with the possibility for renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance. The start date is flexible, but preference will be given to applicants who can begin before July, 2013. Please email questions regarding this positions, the META Center, or its scientific mission to Karen Guillemin ([hidden email]) or Raghuveer Parthasarathy ([hidden email]). To apply, please include: (1) a brief cover letter explaining your background and career interests (2) a CV (including publications), (3) names and contact information for three references. Materials should be submitted to [hidden email] with subject: Posting #12528. Review of applications will begin January 25, 2013. The position will remain open until filled. Women and members of groups underrepresented in science are encouraged to apply. We invite applications from qualified candidates who share our commitment to diversity. The University of Oregon is an EO/AA/ADA institution committed to cultural diversity.
