The summer school in advanced light microscopy is an opportunity for Ph.D. students, post-Doctoral fellows, staff scientists and technical staff to receive training in the skills needed to image the micro-world using the latest in advanced microscopy techniques and equipment. The course begins with the basic concepts and theory of optical microscopy and proceeds using a combination of lectures and practical exercises through advanced light microscopy including live cell and tissue imaging, functional microscopy (FRAP/FRET/FLIM), advanced fluorescence and super-resolution microscopy. This course is appropriate for those with limited or no prior training or those who wish to refresh their skills base. The course is limited to 32 places and once filled will be closed to further registrations. The faculty this year includes: Chris Guérin, Senior Expert Scientist/Senior Microscopist, VIB-UGent Bio Imaging Core, Ghent, BE Saskia Lippens, Manager, VIB-UGent Bio Imaging Core, Ghent, BE Eef Parthoens, Expert Microscopist, VIB-UGent Bio Imaging Core, Ghent, BE Bob Asselberghs, Staff Scientist, VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology, Antwerp, BE Sebastian Munck, Manager, VIB-KU Leuven Bio Imaging Core, Leuven, BE Daniel Van Damme, PI, VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology, Ghent, BE Peter O’Toole, Head of the Technology facility and Head of Imaging and Cytometry, University of York, UK Josh Rappoport, Research Assoc. Prof. and Director of the Center for Advanced Microscopy, Northwestern University, Chicago, US Lucy Collinson, Director of Electron Microscopy, Francis Crick Institute, London, UK Mike Heilemann, Professor, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, Frankfurt, DE Karin Aumayr, Head of Bio Optics Core Facility, Vienna Biocenter, Vienna, AT Kurt Anderson, Director of Light Microscopy, The Francis Crick Institute, London, UK Previous students have been very happy with the training and their feedback has been helpful in refining and perfecting the course: “A good combination of basic knowledge and advanced techniques. Both practical and in theory” "Perfect mix of theory and practical. Very well focused on life science microscopy instead of general microscopy. This provided us with directly applicable knowledge while still giving a good overview about what the future may hold and what one might keep an eye on.” "I like it how we went from the basics to advanced microscopy. The practicals were perfectly placed during the course, so if you missed something in the theory you would get everything in the practicals.” "I learned a lot in this course what I can use immediately in my research. I understand more of the underlying theory so I can play with the options on the microscopes and still know what I'm doing. The tutors were friendly and provided valuable explanations and information.” In addition to 5 days instruction all lunches and 3 dinners are included in the price which has been kept minimal so as not to make it a barrier to anyone wishing to attend.
