The computer has broken down. I wonder if anyone has a computer that fits a Leica SP2 or an old functional Leica SP2 for sale? In such case, please contact me via email. If you think you need more, look for the specs of other HP workstations (e.g. HP xw4600). These computers were quite common, you should be able to find one on eBay, or your local scrap yard :-). At least nowadays these disks are personalized, to contain the hardware tree of your machine. Of course, with enough knowledge you can tinker around to fix that. But have you tried to get a backup disk from Leica? I have no idea how far back their archives go, but in principle they should have your hardware list and a disk image that fits. Maybe an opportunity to emphasize the importance of backups of system disks and system folders. Just Do it! Now, not next month! And after any major change on the system. We have a working old SP2 bought in 2000 with Windows NT installed. No any USB-ports are usable in that operating system. The system works but nobody is using it now. However, every restorable configuration on first Leica was made on CD for restore the system and the installation parameters for particular equipment saved on floppy 3,5 diskettes. From entering in BIOS (take care always to make photos of all options in BIOS, if not it could be difficult to restore) data you could get information of type of HD (columns, cylindres, size, etc.). You have to get same type of connection (SCSI, for example) new disk, but to make it as an old one: in one ocasion, we have to buy a 200 GB HD, but we format it as a 2(system and program)+6 GB (data) old one). But it could work. Thanks for all great reply and suggestions! It does not seem to be a simple task to exchange our old broken computer with another old original Leica computer. Is it realistic at all? That is exactly needed to do so? From entering in BIOS (take care always to make photos of all options in BIOS, if not it could be difficult to restore) data you could get information of type of HD (columns, cylindres, size, etc.). You have to get same type of connection (SCSI, for example) new disk, but to make it as an old one: in one ocasion, we have to buy a 200 GB HD, but we format it as a 2(system and program)+6 GB (data) old one). But it could work. If you decide to look in there, be careful that you don't pull any wires or fibers and (of course) there are open laser beams in the crate so take the necessary precautions. They are very much appreciated! Based on the input we got from the confocal list and Leica, we will replace the broken harddrive, install Windows XP again and with help of Leica and backups/captures try to restart the machine. The current problem is that I'm still not allowed into our building because of pandemic issues. I'm hoping that will change soon, and when it does, I'll check on what we have available. Joel B.
