Dear Confocal list members,

We have a Leica SP2 confocal, which is a good old instrument with a lot of Equipment. The computer has broken down. I wonder if anyone has a computer that fits a Leica SP2 or an old functional Leica SP2 for sale? In such case, please contact me via email.

Hi Niklas,

many years ago a friend of mine posted his detailed experience with
installing Leica LCS software on a separate, sufficiently old computer:
http://confocal-microscopy-list.588098.n2.nabble.com/Leica-TCS-SP2-LCS-and-Win7-tp7582853p7582921.html
I've seen SP2 confocals with HP xw6600, which only has two PCI slots. If
you think you need more, look for the specs of other HP workstations (e.g.
HP xw4600).
These computers were quite common, you should be able to find one on eBay,
or your local scrap yard :-).

Best, zdenek

I wonder what you mean by "broken down".  We had some hard drive problems,
but were able to transfer all of the software to a usb flash drive, and
then operate our SP2 from there.  Now, however, we have a different
problem, in that the coarse stage slips and does not reach the correct
position for operation.

Hi Joel,

To our knowledge, it is just the hard drives that finally gave up after mechanical wear and tear on our machine. Even if we got a new hard drive, though, we don't have the installation disk for the Leica software and I also assume that specialized drivers need to be installed manually.

I'll have to check on that. The current problem is that I'm still not
allowed into our building because of pandemic issues.  I'm hoping that will
change soon, and when it does, I'll check on what we have available.

Niklas,

I am not sure somebody else's CD will be very helpful. At least nowadays
these disks are personalized, to contain the hardware tree of your
machine. Of course, with enough knowledge you can tinker around to fix
that. But have you tried to get a backup disk from Leica? I have no idea
how far back their archives go, but in principle they should have your
hardware list and a disk image that fits.

Maybe an opportunity to emphasize the importance of backups of system
disks and system folders. Just Do it! Now, not next month! And after any
major change on the system.

Steffen

Failed HDD = bad news. Hope you have backups of the LCS HW tree database.
If not, your Leica rep should have a copy. Without it, it's going to be a
pain to restore the system.
I'm not great with backup myself, I'm trying to keep copies in the cloud,
which seems safe...

Hi Niklas.
We have a working old SP2 bought in 2000 with Windows NT installed. No any USB-ports are usable in that operating system. The system works but nobody is using it now.
However, every restorable configuration on first Leica was made on CD for restore the system and the installation parameters for particular equipment saved on floppy 3,5 diskettes.
Best regards,
Konstantin

Hi again.
From entering in BIOS (take care always to make photos of all options in BIOS, if not it could be difficult to restore) data you could get information of type of HD (columns, cylindres, size, etc.). You have to get same type of connection (SCSI, for example) new disk, but to make it as an old one: in one ocasion, we have to buy a 200 GB HD, but we format it as a 2(system and program)+6 GB (data) old one). But it could work.

Konstantin

Failed HDD = bad news. Hope you have backups of the LCS HW tree database.
If not, your Leica rep should have a copy. Without it, it's going to be a
pain to restore the system.
I'm not great with backup myself, I'm trying to keep copies in the cloud,
which seems safe...

Hi!

Thanks for all great reply and suggestions! It does not seem to be a simple task to exchange our old broken computer with another old original Leica computer. Is it realistic at all? That is exactly needed to do so?

From my days at Leica Microsystems, I thnik I recall that systems would ship with an CD/DVD image of the original HDD hidden in the bottom of the laser crate (that pulls out from under the computer desk).  If you decide to look in there, be careful that you don't pull any wires or fibers and (of course) there are open laser beams in the crate so take the necessary precautions.

Dear Joel,

Thanks for your efforts! They are very much appreciated!

Based on the input we got from the confocal list and Leica, we will replace the broken harddrive, install Windows XP again and with help of Leica and backups/captures try to restart the machine.

Best regards
Niklas Lorén

I'll have to check on that. The current problem is that I'm still not allowed into our building because of pandemic issues.  I'm hoping that will change soon, and when it does, I'll check on what we have available.
