(and if it exists, for what distribution?) OR 2) A Linux driver for firewire? (and if it exists, for what distribution?) OR 3) A Windows virtual machine that supports Firewire and runs on a Linux host? Thanks! A remarkable amount of stuff does just work out-of-the-box on Linux, but not everything. One of the issues with some firewire devices is that the manufacturers can be reluctant to help support their devices ... trade secrets, OpenSource worries and so on. I you already have a device, often just try it an see is as good an approach as any. Of course, if you're thinking of buying a product, that's a risky strategy, especially if the device is expensive. As a pertinent example of the worries, though, the page you link mentions Focusrite firewire audio devices as "almost every device is fully supported", but ... and here's the real issue: the original Saffire Pro40 is well supported, but the second release has a later chipset, is not supported and, sadly, Focusrite won't help. Possibly that's because they themselves have been obliged to sign an NDA and so may not help. I personally have been involved only firewire audio, not firewire video. If the video interfaces are better standardised than the audio interfaces, things may be smoother. Gordon.
