After a brief pause to regroup, the MMP is back bigger and stronger than ever: we obtained a grant and added on a Histotech component! The cohort five graduates not only have the standard, thorough MMP training in all things fluorescence, they also have already had some experience with microtomy! Our graduates have just completed a year of rigorous training in the art and science of microscopy. They understand the theory behind a variety of imaging modalities, and have extensive hands-on training on a wide variety of optical microscopes, including confocals. They have had training in GLP, Research Design, Tissue Culture, live cell imaging, IHC, morphometrics, microtomy, specimen prep, image optimization and post-acquisition processing. Our curriculum stresses oral presentation skills, teamwork, critical thinking, experimental design, creativity, versatility, ongoing learning, and, above all, the ability to troubleshoot. Our graduates are very intelligent, enthusiastic and hardworking. They come from a wide diversity of backgrounds: we have students who have professional experience in SEM, photography, graphic design, IVF, database management, sales, and many who already have a B.S. in Biology, along with students who are at the beginning their career paths. Furthermore, this program reflects the tremendous diversity in ethnic, cultural and academic backgrounds for which our campus is known. They have just completed a variety of semester-long independant research projects including: - neurogenesis and the development of swimming behaviors in lottia Gigantea - role of tight junctions in the migration of epithelial sheets - slime mold motility art - modulators of algal proliferation - repair of an antique SEM - development of STEM educational outreach activities - role of actin and melatonin in scintillon movement in bioluminescent algae Host an intern! Do you have a long list of back burner projects you never seem to be able to complete? Would you like to inspire and mentor the next generation of scientists? Consider sponsoring an intern! Our graduates are available for both full-time and part-time internships (including nights and weekends). The purpose of this internship is to expose them to your work environment in order, to help them choose their career path, while also broadening their skill set. We are interested in both paid and unpaid opportunities in a variety of settings. If you can use an extra pair of helping hands this summer, please contact us! Join us for Graduation! If you are in the SF Bay Area, you are cordially invited to our graduation. It is a great way to meet our graduates and to see the gorgeous work they have done. Most of all, it's a very fun party with a bunch of fellow microscopists. Come join us on Friday, May 23rd, 2014! Reception at 6:30; brief ceremony at 7 pm; dancing, eating and general merriment until 9 pm. Location: the "student lounge" in the R building, Merritt College Oakland, 12500 Campus Drive, Oakland, CA 94609. (Just park at the top of the hill, for free, and follow our signs to the nearby R building.) I look forward to hearing from you!
