Microscope darkening for 2P NDD imaging

Hi All,
I have a 2P set up on an inverted microscope and need to add some additional light blocking for using the NDDs. I know people use clothes draped over the scope but my search of the archives didn't turn up any specifics on what type of cloth or where it can be purchased. Does anyone here have suggestions?

Thanks!
Wendy

Re: Microscope darkening for 2P NDD imaging

Some people use heavy duty ("contractor") garbage bags cut into sheets but I prefer the more flexible and less staticky black plastic cloth sold by ThorLabs.  http://thorlabs.com/NewGroupPage9.cfm?ObjectGroup_ID=190

The absolute best trick we have for managing almost all the spurious room light when doing 2p is to block the light coming from the monitor using 3M security screens that you see folks using in airports etc.  You can get these for a 30 inch monitor for a few hundred dollars.  This removes the need for all those silly tinfoil/curtain drapes that we all use(d) to stop the light getting to the NDDs...You do have to be front on to the monitor to get a good look at whats going on, and it is a bit dimmer but it works really well.  Beyond that its black electrical tape over all the idiot lights that apparently the vendors feel we need :-)

Oh yeah, we have little black patches of tape over so many little blinking
lights in our lab.  It is actually quite absurd.

Hi Wendy Salmon,
I suggested a facility user to cut and tape a new black garbage bag on
the upright microscope when NDDs were used for a multiphoton
experiment.
The feedback is:  It works amazingly well.
