Please see details here: http://bit.do/MICSRA Departmental Overview The Cancer Research Laboratory’s Molecular Imaging Center (MIC) and the new Zeiss Berkeley Brain-MIC, both under the direction of Specialist Holly Aaron, house a total of 18 major microscope systems. The MIC supports over 80 labs on campus, has over 250 users, and trains an average of 10 new users per month. This is one of the largest and busiest microscopy facilities in the country. The facility now supports 18 major recharge instruments and four offline workstations. These systems are highly sensitive, sophisticated instruments with an average value of over half a million dollars each. They are comprised of expensive objective lenses that need specialized care, light and laser sources needing individualized maintenance, multiple computers, highly sophisticated mechanical and electronic parts and software, requiring advanced and specific training. Responsibilities This position will report directly to the director of the MIC and will work under her guidance and training. The CRL-MIC is accessible to researchers across campus and this position will require interactions with many of the facility users, thus meaning this position has a full or nearly full extent of the MIC operations. This position will not be involved in other areas of operation of the CRL. The impact of this position will be greatly sensed, as the primary goal is to provide additional, regular support and training for all the research activities conducted at the MIC. This position will allow projects of all levels to receive more support and get up and running more quickly, in some cases by freeing up time for the MIC Director. The continued support of imaging and imaging resources at the university should match the enormous increase in interest and demand for high-level microscopy access across the biological and physical sciences. *Responsibilities for SRA II - Microscopy Research Associate:* •Assisting users: advising on imaging conditions, sample preparation, data transfer or export, data analysis. •Microscope and lab maintenance: cleaning objectives, filters, checking water pumps, replacing lamp bulbs, maintaining incubators and biosafety hood, and general lab supplies. •Microscope calibration: starting up and testing, checking basic functions, calibrating the systems, recording the calibration data and any errors; archiving data. •Trouble-shooting: reproducing and diagnosing problems or failures, including contacting service personnel to get things fixed. •Training users on theory and use of various instruments. •Seminar and conference support •Assisting users with custom acquisition or analysis. •Various additional activities as needed, including website updates, trips to the hardware store, researching new accessories or materials, ordering/restocking, organizing demos, and others. *Responsibilities for SRA III - Microscopy Research Associate:* •Training users: monthly lecture, hands-on training on most of the MIC and BRAIN-MIC instruments, follow-up training for more advanced imaging experiments. •Protocol development and creation for slide scanning projects: including collaborations. •Seminar, conference and workgroup activities: design, direction and leading of bi-monthly Open-MIC workgroup; organize a scientific session at AIM; creative design for AIM conference materials, management and supervision of volunteers, content-checking, and on-site conference management; organization and planning for smaller seminars and demonstrations throughout the year. •Trouble-shooting: reproducing and diagnosing problems or failures, including contacting service personnel to get things fixed. •Advising and assisting users on: imaging conditions, sample preparation, image analysis, rendering and quantification, data transfer and export. •Administrative duties: day-to-day laboratory management, ordering, scheduling, and maintaining databases and records. •Website, blog, twitter, and social-media updates. •Collaborative imaging projects. •Computer and data management.
