Microscopy workshops 24-28 August 2009

Dear All,

First Announcement:

The Advanced Light Microscopy Facilities in the School of Biological Sciences
at the University of Leicester (UK) is organising, in collaboration with GENIE
and industrial partners, three microscopy workshops:

From Basic to Advanced Microscopy

24th August 2009: Immunolabelling
25th - 27th August 2009: Fluorescence Microscopy
28th August 2009: Quantitative Fluorescence Based Screening

The academic rate for the full week of three workshops is £600 (non-academic
£1200). The fees include lecture printouts, consumables for the
immunolabelling workshop, coffee, lunches and a dinner during the
fluorescence microscopy workshop, sponsored by Olympus UK.

All workshops include hands-on sessions. The equipment confirmed for the
Fluorescence Microscopy workshop:

- Olympus FV1000 confocal laser scanning microscope
- Olympus FV1000 confocal laser scanning microscope with FCS/FLIM
- Olympus FV10i, Olympus new compact confocal laser scanning microscope
- Olympus cell^R imaging systems
- Olympus BX61 automated microscope with Applied Spectral Imaging's
scanning platform
- Nikon A1 confocal laser scanning microscope with TIRF
- Nikon BioStation IM
- Leica TCS SP5 confocal laser scanning microscope
- Agilent Technologies iMIC 2000 microscope system
- PerkinElmer UltraVIEW VoX spinning disk confocal microscope
- Volocity, Improvision's high performance 3D imaging software package
- Imaris, the cutting-Edge 3D and 4D Imaging Software for Life Sciences from
Bitplane
- Huygens deconvolution software from Scientific Volume Imaging (SVI)

Carolina Forces in Biology Workshop Rescheduled for September 22-25, 2009

Folks-

Due to unexpected conflicts with the previous date of our workshop, we had to postpone to September 22-25, 2009.  We have now finalized that date, and hope those that might have been unable to attend in May will be able to at our new date, and those that had planned to attend the earlier date will also be able to reschedule.

We have found that people from senior investigators to beginning grad students find this four day, hands-on introduction to the theory and practice of applying forces to biological material to be very useful.  Attendees are also invited to bring (or send ahead of time) their own cells or material of interest to probe during the workshop.

More details:  The Fifth Annual Carolina Workshop on Force Measurement and Manipulation in Biological Microscopy is presented by the Computer Integrated Systems for Microscopy and Manipulation (CISMM) group at UNC-Chapel Hill.  It will be given on September 22-25, 2009.  We demonstrate how to use magnetic tweezers, laser trap, combined fluorescence-AFM, and microfluidics to apply and assess forces on the cellular and subcellular scales. The theory for low Reynold's number forces and the force microscopies are covered in lectures in the mornings, and hands-on demos on each instrument are presented in the afternoons.  A final day is reserved for working through free software for evaluation of data, including tracking, data simulation, and 3D rendering.  The software is also available at any time for download at http://cismm.cs.unc.edu/downloads/).

Space is limited to about 20 attendees, which gives lots of hands-on time at each microscope, and allows lots of discussion. Costs are $775 and include supplies, breakfasts, and a keynote dinner, but does not include lodging.

For more detailed information or to print off a flier to post:   http://cismm.cs.unc.edu/resources/events/

To apply and arrange accommodations, contact Cassandra Houston at (919)-962-4057, or to find out more about the workshop, how to send samples, or CISMM, call me.  (919) 843-2798.

Hope to see you there!
