Hi,

One monitor of our fluoview 1000 died. The system was equipped with 2 x
21.3 inch monitors. I have a hard time finding a 21.3 inch replacement
monitor to match the screen height that is not stupidly expensive.

I heard new systems come with 1 large screen. I would like to know what
size screen you have that does a good job.

Thank you

JP

For dual monitor setups I have actually implemented one large screen and
one smaller screen. The smaller, cheaper monitor has all the controls and
buttons on it, while the large high-quality screen has mostly just the
image on it. I find users appreciate having the interface and the view on
separate monitors. Keeping the large high-quality one free for the imaging
view lets the users tile out their channels with nothing obscuring the
windows. For my setups that have just a single monitor, you want at least a
27" class monitor with 2560x1400  resolution so you have room for both the
interface and the view. There are 'Ultra HD' displays coming out that have
3800+ pixels, but I worry that the overall quality of the display, such as
color reproduction, has taken a hit for the sake of the higher resolution.

I would recommend using the same or similar resolution as the original
monitors.  Going to 4k won't do very much, as you are likely scanning at a
much lower resolution.  Resolution is probably the least important aspect.

Size depends on how far you sit from the screen.  If you lean over
eyepieces a lot and must look at the screen, go big.  If not, 20 inch is
probably fine.

Unless you'll be calibrating the monitor yourself (which is not a bad idea
and can be done with inexpensive equipment off Amazon), I recommend paying
close attention to the color accuracy of the display.  Displays with
inaccurate colors or gamma can cause images to look quite different on
preview then in post processing.  Many websites review displays and can
provide you with recommendations.  I also recommend you get a display with
at least 8 bit color channels, and IPS (or similar wide viewing angle
technology).  We have tried TN with microscopes before, and found that the
angle dependent colors/brightness are quite obnoxious when trying to
manipulate a sample.

Hope that helps.

Re: Monitor for confocal microscope

Hi JP,

Other things to consider:

1) Pixel pitch.  Maybe you were running the 21.3" (4:3) monitor at 1600x1200 resolution?  That would mean .27mm.  I would not go smaller than this.
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/specs.htm
So if you have 3200 x 1200 total desktop resolution, then one possibility is 2560 x 1440 on a 32" (16:9) screen.

2) Height and tilt adjustments.  I always get monitors with these, even though they are more expensive.

We recently purchased the BenQ BL3200PT and seems good so far, comparable to the HP that typically ships with a new confocal.

Here are some vendor web sites that might help for the comparisons:
http://www.cnet.com/topics/monitors/buying-guide/
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/faq.htm
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Monitors-Displays/ci/6559/N/3878805754/view/Grid
http://www.newegg.com/LCD-LED-Monitors/SubCategory/ID-20
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/guidedSearch.asp?CatId=12

Cheers,
Jeff

Take the new big monitor, and keep the small one, too....
We had ours replaced under warranty (same problem--one of the 21"
monitors failed).  They replaced the defective one with a 30" NEC LED
Multisync.  What we now do is put the live-view window on the big
monitor and put all the control panels on the small one.
I've used single-monitor systems (on a Zeiss) and I don't like it--I
always had some control panel in the way of live-view, and found myself
constantly moving them around.

I am testing $339 4k monitor right now. I bought it  at tigerdirect   during $299 sale but currently  only walmart seems to sell for $339
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Seiki-Digital-SE39UY04-39-4K-Ultra-HD-2160p-120Hz-LED-HDTV/33490005
However. one should keep in mind that graphics card may need to be upgraded that adds at least $70.

Regarding performance. I corroborate George that 4k monitor is extremely impressive, equivalent of having FOUR full HD monitors. However, most of
the current software including the OS windows 7 are not 4k resolution ready yet,
However, just few limitations/problems I encountered:
1. intermittent few second delays in computer response
2. intermittent freezes and crashes  of software especially web browser
3. no stable graphics card drivers for 4k resolution

More reliable and efficient current alternative to 4k monitor would be lower resolution one (e.g. HP ZR30W, 2560x1600  as suggested by George) combined
with virtual  desktop of 4k or even higher resolution.
BTW, HP has  DreamColor Z27x which allows (in hardware) to scroll around 4k image. Did anybody test how it works?

Hi Jean-Pierre,

The cheapest solution may be to replace both monitors by new
identical ones. You can find 22" monitors below $90 each. It
would be very helpful if you tell the resolution of your original
21.3 inch displays.

My Core this year purchased several new microscopy and confocal
systems. They came with 24-30 inch HP or Dell monitors. HP ZR30W
is really good monitor and at 2560x1600 pixels resolution most likely
would replace the functionality of dual older monitors.

Best,

Thank you all.

I'm leaning towards going for two Dell ultra sharp 24" monitors. That
should do the job I think.

Thank you
