Dear Friends
I would like to inform you that we are going for a special issue in Journal of Biomedical Optics on the topic of One day Symposium in honor of Forster's 100th birthday. http://www.kcci.virginia.edu/symposium/
Please see the details in the JBO web site. http://spie.org/x1825.xml
Please inform to your students and friends about this great opportunity to submit a paper on FRET or FLIM-FRET. It's not necessary the author(s) has to attend the one day symposium to submit a paper for this JBO special issue.

FRET at 65: A celebration of Förster
Guest Editors: Ammasi Periasamy, Steven S. Vogel and Robert M. Clegg

Sixty-five years ago Prof. Theodor Förster, a German physical chemist, published his first manuscript on resonance energy transfer between fluorescent compounds. In subsequent manuscripts Förster further developed his theory, which quantitatively describes the dipole-dipole nonradiative energy transfer phenomenon. Most importantly, he showed how to express the efficiency of transfer in terms of measured experimental parameters. In his first publication, he  even applied his theory to estimate rates of initial steps in photosynthesis, which was one of his motivations. The acronym for this form of energy transfer, FRET, has recently been re-coined to honor Förster's fundamental contributions: Förster Resonance Energy Transfer. Over the past 20 years the number of FRET citations has increased almost 300 fold. This rapid growth in FRET publications results primarily from the application of FRET spectroscopy and microscopy as a tool to study biological processes such as protein interactions, conformational changes, the assembly and stoichiometry of biological complexes, and as the basis for the development of new biosensors. Importantly, recent applications of FRET imaging have opened the door for applying many classical quantitative biochemical approaches for FRET analysis, which have been so successful over the past 50 years to in vitro studies, to explore biological reactions inside living cells. This special edition of JBO follows the symposium 'FRET at 65: A celebration of Förster', held at the University of Virginia and will be devoted to highlighting the evolution of many aspects of FRET microscopy.

Manuscript submission date: April 1, 2011

Authors should visit the JBO website for submission. Information for authors is available at http://spie.org/jbo and click Editorial schedule or http://spie.org/x1825.xml

Best wishes,
Ammasi

Dear Friends
Many of you worked in FLIM and FRET microscopy might have used Prof. Robert M. Clegg.

It is with great sorrow that I have to inform you that Prof. Clegg passed away at
10:15 pm on Monday from complications arising from his cancer. He died surrounded by his family and in as much peace of mind as could be hoped for.

Dear All
Happy New Year 2013!
Registration is still open for the 12th Annual Workshop on FRET Microscopy, March 11-16, 2013. We plan to organize a memorial lecture during the workshop for late Prof. Robert Clegg. Prof. Thomas and Donna Jovin, Germany, agreed to give lectures.
The workshop registration fee covers training on PFRET data Analysis software (2-color), breakfast, lunch, dinner, lodging for 6 nights, a book and other workshop materials.
To register for the upcoming hands on training workshop on FRET microscopy March 11-16, 2013.........
Please visit the web site: http://www.kcci.virginia.edu/workshop/workshop2013/index.php
Morning theory on basics including various FRET microscopy techniques, data acquisition, FRET data analysis, and FRET assays. Afternoon hands on training on data acquisition and processing. Discussion with the participants on every day in the class room and in the laboratory by the leading FRET experts. The hands on training with living cells will be on wide-field, spinning-disk and laser scanning confocal, spectral FRET, lifetime FRET microscopy systems. All these microcopy systems for training will be provided by various vendors including Carl Zeiss, Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Becker & Hickl, Boston Electronics, ISS, Lambert Instruments, and Picoquant.
