Hi all,
Thanks again to all those that provided third party sources for the condenser
pinion.  Haven't reported back because I still haven't gotten the part (it's on
order).  New problem with E800.  I slide the beam splitter out and heard
"something" fall off in the head.  Now the beam splitter is very sloppy; doesn't
seat in the same position and doesn't stay put.  I have been trying to get into
the head, but after taking out all the obvious screws I am stuck.  Anybody have
the schematics to the E800 head or other suggestions on repair?
thanks,
michael bastiani

Michael,

Which lab in Utah are you working for?  I am wondering if the E800 you are
asking about is the one I bought for Dr. Kopecek's lab when i was a
graduate student back in the late 90's.

Take the trinoc off of the microscope - there is one screw for which you
need the standard Nikon 2.5 mm hex driver to loosen.  This screw is located
on the right hand side (as you face the scope) in a small indentation
between the trinoc and body.  Once this screw is loose the trinoc comes off
of the body - make sure you have removed the camera and any adapters first.

If I recall correctly, there are four screws (one in each corner) on the
bottom of the head that need to be removed and then the bottom cover plate
will come off.  If you have already tried this try slipping a very fine
bladed screw driver of knife between the edge of the plate and the inside
rim of the body to pry it up.  If this is the scope that I bought, the
prism fell from it's original mounting many years ago (say 1997 or 1998),
and I had to reseat it several times, before I finally had a service guy
come in and glue it back in place.  Based on your description, I am not
sure if the trinoc is salvageable, but it is worth a try.  Just make sure
to keep track of every piece you take off or out and always be gentle.

Since leaving graduate school I have moved back to North Carolina or I
would offer to come by and see if I could help!

Good luck.
