The position is full-time, year-round, and can be filled at the Research Assistant I or II level, depending on education and experience. The position is currently funded for 2 years with the possibility of continued funding. The goal of the project is to analyze the spatial organization of microbial communities in the human mouth using fluorescence spectral imaging microscopy and computational image analysis. Responsibilities of the position will include microscopy; image analysis; sample preparation including collection, fixation, and embedding and sectioning of samples from human volunteers and potentially other invertebrate and vertebrate organisms; maintenance of bacterial cultures; and general lab organization and maintenance. Basic qualifications: Applicants must hold a B.A. or B.S. in biology, biochemistry, physics, mathematics, or a related field and must have research experience and strong attention to detail. This position requires the individual to work occasionally at night or on weekends in order to meet deadlines. Position level and salary will depend on education and experience. Preferred qualifications: Experience with microscopy is strongly preferred and experience with microbiology and/or bioinformatics is desirable. Physical requirements: Fine motor skills and willingness to work with potentially biohazardous materials and standard laboratory chemicals including fixatives and solvents.
