Tom --------------------------------- > > POST DOCTORAL POSITION DESCRIPTION > > Inter-individual differences in predisposition and severity of pulmonary infections and inflammatory lung disease are poorly understood. Surfactant protein A (SP-A), aside from its surfactant-related functions (i.e., surfactant stability and structure, and surfactant secretion), has an essential role in innate host defense. SP-A modulates the phenotype of alveolar macrophages AM, the sentinel cells of lung innate immunity, and enhances phagocytosis of pathogens, as well as affects cytokine production and other host defense functions. Human SP- A is encoded by two similar genes, SP-A1 and SP-A2, with splice and sequence variants identified for each. The research focus is: a) on the differential regulation of SP-A genetic variants expression with emphasis on the role of 5’UTR and 3’UTR on translation (Noutsios, AJP Lung 2013, 304: L722-L735; Silveyra, AJP Lung 2010, 299: L523-L534); b) on mechanisms via which SP-A genetic variants differentially > modulate the expression profile and function of the alveolar macrophage (Phelps, J of Proteomics and Genomics Res 2013, 1(2):2-26; Phelps, Proteome Science 2011, 9:67). > > The successful candidate must have documented expertise in cell imaging, confocal and fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, and be able to work with small animals. A strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is necessary. In addition the candidate is expected to be hard-working, enthusiastic, work independently, have excellent command of the English language, and be able to interact and work well with others. > > Please e-mail your CV to Dr. Joanna Floros, Ph.D. Evan Pugh Professor of Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director, CHILD Research in the Department of Pediatrics, H085.
