Dear Core Managers/Directors:

Please share how you manage users/configurations and track usage
on confocal systems. Specifically I am interested in
systems using ZEN software which does not have
built-in multiuser/tracking capabilities.

We just moved to new building so there is good reason to
improve management of two confocal systems running ZEN
(one is new and one upgraded from AIM).
I already installed following features:
1. online calendar to book time
2.  card access to the confocal rooms
3.  Greyware logon monitor to record username and logon/logoff time.

I consider creating windows account for each lab. This will
allow to monitor usage using Greyware. Please advise if there
are other simple and efficient ways to track usage as well as
set different confocal configurations for differing users.

Finally, to fight dust/dirt we consider requiring to change shoes
before entering the confocal rooms, and placing sticky/static
mats outside (to trap dust from footwear). Maybe somebody is
using such mats and can advise on the brand/model.

Thanks,
Arvydas

Regarding the sticky mats, you could ask the histology lab in a nearby hospital.  Many use them to keep the paraffin wax from being tracked out of the lab and creating a hallway slipping hazard.

I use the 3M Clean Walk mat:

http://www.grainger.com/product/3M-Clean-Walk-Mat-2GJJ4

It helps somewhat, but you have to remember to peel off fresh sheets fairly
frequently.

Michael,

S.S.Kou's transport-of-intensity approach seems to be 2D. Is it somehow
possible to map refractive indexes in 3D without interpolation between 2D
data for different optical slices?
And one more question: could you please recommend an open-source
software for optical path difference calculation regardless of the optical
setup used (DIC, brightfield, phase contrast...)? I cannot get the
underlying math, the code usually makes it more easy to understand.

Thanks in advance,
Sergey

Sorry Sergey, don't have the answer. Maybe Shalin could help? You can also contact Laura Waller at Berkeley, she is very knowledgeable in these questions. And if you are in Russia, you might try talking to Vladimir Tychinsky or Alexander Tikhonov in Moscow
