Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division has a great opportunity for a
Microscopyy/FACS Manager to provide multifunctional technical
expertise and support to all researchers using the advanced
microscopy and flow cytometry facilities. The Advanced Microscopy
Facility has multiple laser scanning confocal microscopes (Zeiss
LSM710 and spinning disk), multiple wide-field digital microscopy
systems (Zeiss microscopes running AxioVision), a Cellomics
Arrayscan high-content imaging system, various digital and
conventional microscopes, and supporting equipment. The FACS
Facility has a FACS Vantage SE/DiVA flow sorter and a FACS Calibur
flow analyzer. Under general direction of division management and
scientific staff provide training and expert advice to researchers
using the Facility in proper imaging and flow cytometry experiments
on these instruments. Assist users in experiment design and
execution, provide expert advice in maintenance of the instruments,
and manage all operational aspects of the facilities.

As a Microscopy/FACS Manager, you will be involved with:

      - Training: Primary responsibility to train researchers in the
proper and safe use of the instruments in the Facilities. For
the Advanced Microscopy Facility this includes training in use
of the microscopes, image acquisition, and image manipulations.
For the FACS Facility this includes training on flow analysis
and flow sorting, as well as sample preparation techniques.
- Scientific tasks: Provide consultation to users on the
appropriate instruments, tools, and preparation techniques to
use as well as in the experimental design. Assist in execution
of microscopic image acquisition and analysis experiments.
Oversee and assist in the execution of FACS analysis and FACS
sorting experiments. Work closely with researchers to devise and
implement highly complex experiments on the instruments that are
        beyond basic operation.
- Oversight of instrumentation: Apply in depth scientific and
engineering concepts in overseeing cleaning and alignment,
regular diagnostics and calibration of complex scientific
instrumentation. Use professional concepts and technical
knowledge to provide resolutions to complex problems. Act as a
primary contact with the vendors providing preventative
maintenance and repairs, and with LBNL Procurement. Assume a
role of primary interface with EH&S (incl. LSD safety
coordinator) to handle SJHA issues, and assume the
responsibility for meeting all the EHS requirements.
- Operational management of the facilities including ensuring
all users met EHS training requirements, ensuring the
appropriate supplies are available and overseeing scheduling the
instrument. Maintain accurate records of the work performed.
- Participation in development of new imaging strategies,
evaluate new software for image or flow data analysis, test out
new microscopy or flow cytometry hardware, etc.
- Developing teaching curriculum and teach microscopy and flow
        cytometry in class room format.
Key Success Factors:
      - In-depth experience with fluorescence microscopy, confocal
microscopy, and imaging with image analysis. Extensive expertise
with flow cytometry. Experience with and a mindset for teaching
and supporting researchers with microscopy and flow cytometry.
Demonstrated ability to work as a team member to accomplish
        research goals.
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in biophysics, bioengineering,
        or related field.
- Specific experience with Zeiss LSM510/710 confocal
microscopes, Cellomics instruments, and/or AxioVision imaging
        software.
- Specific experience with BD FACS Calibur and FACS Vantage flow
        cytometry instrumentation.
- Experience with image processing and analysis software systems
as well as CellQuest, DiVA, and FlowJo flow cytometry software.
- Previous experience working in a research laboratory in the
areas of cell and molecular biology.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and interact
with a diverse group of individuals.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
Notes
This is a one-year Term appointment with a possibility of renewal
contingent on satisfactory job performance, continuing availability
of funds, and on going operational needs.
