Position available in a Confocal Microscopy Core Facility at NIH (Bethesda, MD)

BioSearch is seeking to recruit an Assistant to support the Staff Scientist
who is in charge of a Confocal Microscopy Core Facility at NIH.  The
Confocal Core contains a laser-scanning confocal microscope, a spinning disk
confocal microscope, and a total internal reflection/epifluorescence
microscope.  General duties include the maintenance and operation of the
microscopes and imaging software, assisting and scheduling users, acquiring
processing and saving images, and maintaining a facility database.  Under
the supervision of the Staff Scientist, the assistant may also collaborate
on on-going research projects that require imaging data.  The assistant is
expected to apply new imaging techniques as they emerge.

We are seeking a candidate with either a M.S. or B.S. in a
biological/physical sciences discipline with a sincere interest in
microscopy and previous experience as a user of confocal microscopes.

Due to the nature of this position (significant amount of routine work) and
the inability to conduct independent research projects PhD level candidates
need not apply.  However we encourage you to pass this information along to

Experience Required:
o          prior experience in the application of confocal microscopy to
cell biology, as well as training and experience in a wide range of fields
related to cell biology, protein biochemistry, and molecular biology is
required.
o          the ability to use and maintain a microscope, demonstrated by
experience with image acquisition with a confocal or fluorescent microscope;
skill with image processing software such as Imaris, Velocity or PhotoShop
AND experience with office software including Excel and Word;
o          experience with various immunofluorescence and histochemical
staining techniques including knowledge of and experience with various
fixatives; ability to perform standard cell culture techniques including
media formulation, cultivation, and cryopreservation of cells.

Desired Experience:
o          the ability to use MatLab;
o          experience training others in the operation of a confocal microscope;
o          experience with acquisition of 3D and 4D images;
o          experience with microscope maintenance such as bulb replacement
and condenser alignment;
o          experience with multi-fluorophore staining for proteins and
organelles and staining with DAPI and Toluidine blue.

Position Details:
o          the position is a full-time, salaried, benefited, long-term
contractor position to the NIH
o          the position is located on NIH's main campus in Bethesda, MD (20892)
