Imaging Specialist
The multi-departmental Vision Science group on the Berkeley campus is recruiting for a Assistant or Associate Specialist to work on the imaging aspects of studies of the visual system. Researchers in the vision science group are housed in the School of Optometry, the department of Molecular and Cell biology, the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute and other units on the campus.
Responsibilities 
The Imaging Specialist will work within the Vision Sciences Group and will provide services to users of the CORE Grant for Vision Science. One primary goal will be customizing optical systems for specific research projects, including design of a variety of detection schemes (including high sensitivity devices such as PMTs and CCD cameras) and basic and advanced illumination systems (including lasers and patterned illumination system). Working under the supervision of the Imaging Core Director, this person will assist and train users to operate a wide range of optical imaging technologies. The Vision Sciences Core Group is affiliated with the Molecule Imaging Center which houses several advanced technology microscopes, including two-photon confocal microscopes, line-scanning confocal, a variety of laser illumination sources, and spectral detection.
Requirements & Qualifications 
Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering required with 2-3 years of experience, or a Master's Degree in Science or Engineering preferred.
Laboratory skills in various optical, confocal and scanning probe microscopy techniques, lasers, and optical benches are highly desirable. The candidate should be self-motivated with a strong desire to acquire on-the-job training and to develop intellectual and practical professional skills. Demonstrated ability to work well in teams is essential. Candidate must be able to work well with a large, diverse community of users with emphasis on customer service.
Salary
The full annual range for this position is  $38,952 -$44,400.
The appointment is expected to run from September 1, 2008 - July 31, 2013 with the possibility of extension depending on continued funding availability.
