Post Doctoral Fellow Position, McGill University, Montreal

Metastatic breast cancer, which is capable of spreading to distant organs and tissues,
represents the most deadly aspect of disease progression. Enhanced cell migration and invasion are
fundamental aspects of the metastatic phenotype. Our previous work has identified Lipoma Preferred Partner
(LPP) as an indispensable regulator of cell migration in breast cancer cells by virtue of its ability to control
focal adhesion turnover. LPP is normally restricted to mesenchymal cells, but we show that it is co-opted by
breast cancer cells that have undergone an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition to increase their migratory
properties. Moreover, LPP is required for efficient breast cancer lung metastasis. Using innovative and
sophisticated live cell imaging approaches, we will elucidate the molecular mechanisms that allow LPP to
promote focal adhesion (FA) turnover. We will further elucidate the biological significance of LPP-mediated
actin remodeling on the development of breast cancer metastases. Combined, these multi-disciplinary
approaches will provide the first molecular insight and biological significance into how LPP-mediated
focal adhesion turnover increases breast cancer aggressiveness.
