I too would recommend the Lichtman paper. I'm also a big fan of David Wolf's chapter on fluorescence in the book Digital Microscopy (3rd) edition. If your university has access to Elsevier Science Direct, you should be able to download this chapter:

This chapter also does a really good job of explaining the fluorescence lifetime and how this can be used for imaging.
