Position:  Applications Specialist - Catalog Business

Semrock is looking for an Applications Specialist to join our Catalog Business.  This is a unique opportunity for someone with a background in science and engineering and who prefers to work closely with customers to understand and support their needs as well as grow Semrock's applications knowledge to help accelerate business growth.

Position Summary:

In support of its goals Semrock is looking for a dedicated Applications Specialist with a strong background in the application of fluorescence techniques to biotechnology. In particular, the Applications Specialist should have a good understanding of the basic science and optical systems, and possess expertise in the relevant equipment technologies, including optics and imaging systems, CCD and other detection systems, and image-processing software.  The Applications Specialist will work as part of a team including R&D, Operations, & Sales and will also be the customer's technical voice inside the company.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  *   Provide technical sales and applications support for Catalog customers as well as internal team.
  *   Work with key customers to engineer existing Semrock product selections as well as designing new customized products
  *   Support the development of messaging and technical materials to describe and market products (for website, print catalog, posters, ads, press releases, whitepapers, technical notes, etc.)
  *   Work with select experts and customers to arrange evaluation experiments with Semrock products and gather the data into meaningful "white paper" reports
  *   Gather, organize, and regularly communicate product market information derived from e-mail, telephone and face-to-face interactions with customers (ranging from analysis of customer requirements and competitive products to estimation of market sizes and opportunities)

Skills and Characteristics:

  *   Deep understanding of and demonstrated proficiency in fluorescence imaging and measurement systems (especially digital microscopy); strong knowledge of lasers and optics highly desired
  *   Excellent interpersonal skills
  *   Ability to work independently and be a self-starter
  *   Strong data analysis, and writing and presentation skills
  *   Solid computer skills required; structured programming ability desired

Education / Experience:

  *   Post-graduate degree and significant experience in biophysics, biotechnology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences or directly related field
  *   Optical component or imaging instrumentation industry experience highly desired

Reporting and Location:

The position is based in Rochester, NY and will report to the Business Line Leader of the Catalog Business and works closely with the Marketing, Sales, R&D and Operations teams.

This position involves about 10% planned travel in order to support workshops, trade shows / conferences and customer visits.
